Foreword by Director General of Cultural Development, Utilization, and Empowerment Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Indonesia

Jakarta Film Week (JFW) has played an important role in the growth of Indonesia’s film ecosystem. Through its diverse programmes, the festival provides an alternative platform for film screenings, enriches film discourse and discussions, and serves as a meeting point for film industry professionals from Indonesia and abroad. JFW demonstrates the importance of a festival’s continuity in strengthening the film ecosystem as a whole.

We extend our appreciation to everyone behind Jakarta Film Week for maintaining this consistency, from its inaugural edition in 2021 to its sixth edition this year. This sustained commitment has helped create an environment where Indonesian filmmakers, particularly emerging talents, can develop their skills, broaden their perspectives, and access international opportunities.

Under the theme “ENCOUNTER”, Jakarta Film Week 2026 reminds us that every encounter can open up new perspectives and give rise to new possibilities. In cinema, encounters take place between films and their audiences, as well as between different stories, cultures, and experiences. Through these encounters, we can recognise the richness of our nation’s life and build dialogue with the global community.

The Ministry of Culture remains committed to strengthening Indonesia’s film ecosystem. This commitment encompasses improving the quality of film productions and supporting greater genre diversity, nurturing a new generation of talent through a structured and systematic development pathway, and strengthening public film literacy and appreciation by expanding access to a diverse range of films.

We also continue to support Indonesian filmmakers and their works in reaching international audiences by strengthening networks, creating opportunities for collaboration, and encouraging their participation in film forums around the world. Our collaboration with Jakarta Film Week is an important part of these efforts. By bringing together talent development, knowledge exchange, and industry networking, we can ensure that support for Indonesian cinema addresses a range of interconnected needs.

We hope this collaboration will continue and provide even greater opportunities for Indonesian filmmakers to grow alongside their work. Ultimately, we want Indonesia’s film ecosystem to earn greater public trust. This trust grows through high-quality works, diverse stories that resonate with people’s lives, and open, sustainable spaces for film appreciation.

In line with this vision, we hope Indonesian filmmakers and their works will gain greater visibility, becoming increasingly recognised and acknowledged internationally. Through film, Indonesia’s rich stories, values, and perspectives can become part of the global conversation.

May Jakarta Film Week continue to strengthen its role in advancing our cultural aspirations: making Indonesian culture a cornerstone of civilisation.

Congratulations on the sixth edition of Jakarta Film Week 2026. May every encounter give rise to ideas and collaborations that enrich the future of Indonesian cinema.
