CHILDHOOD TRAUMA, FEMALE EMPOWERMENT, TRADITION AND SUPERSTITION | DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, BLOOD DEPICTION, CHILD DISTRESS
Amelia, a 12-year-old Chinese-Indonesian girl, has just learned of a tradition that says women who have received their period must not wash their underwear together with men’s clothes, or the men will face bad luck. Her mother upholds this tradition, even though her father often beats her to the point of near-death. Amelia then decides to save herself and her mother through a witchcraft method she learned about to speed up her period. Slowly, this obsession brings about a change in Amelia without her realizing it.
