CHILD'S POINT OF VIEW, COMING OF AGE, SELF-DISCOVERU

Suburban Tokyo, 1987. 11-year-old Fuki’s father, Keiji, is battling a terminal illness, and in and out of hospital. Her mother, Utako, is constantly stressed out from caring for Keiji while holding down a full-time job. Left alone with her rich imagination, Fuki becomes fascinated by telepathy and falls ever deeper into her own fantasy world.

Director
CHIE HAYAKAWA

Born in Tokyo in 1976, she studied photography at the School of Visual Arts in New York. Her short film Niagara (2013) was invited to the Cinéfondation section at the Cannes Film Festival and won the Grand Prize at the Pia Film Festival. She directed an episode of Ten Years Japan (2018), with Kore-eda Hirokazu serving as executive producer. Hayakawa made her feature debut with Plan 75 (2022), which was selected for Un Certain Regard at Cannes and received a Special Mention for the Camera d’Or. Renoir is her second feature film and has been selected for the competition section of the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.
