When Is the Right Time to Fall in Love?

Cinta Tak Pernah Tepat Waktu, a film by Hanung Bramantyo, captivated and moved audiences during its screening at Jakarta Film Week 2024. The film, nominated for the Direction Award, is an adaptation of the novel by Puthut EA, featuring young stars like Refal Hady, Nadya Arina, Mira Filzah, and Carisa Perusset.

Hanung revealed that this project had been in the works for quite some time, with a production period spanning nearly a year. For him, this film holds a personal connection, as it is based on a book that resonates deeply with him. He allowed each actor the freedom to explore and interpret their roles individually.

“I invited the actors to reflect on themselves, as this film acts as a mirror for us in confronting commitment and responsibility—two things that reveal us as we truly are,” Hanung explained.

Refal Hady, who plays the lead role of Daku Ramala, acknowledged the challenges of understanding his character, a writer dealing with complex inner struggles. “I explored Daku’s character by reflecting on him through my own life experiences,” Refal shared.

For Haki, the film’s screenwriter, adapting the novel to a script was a delicate process. However, Hanung’s openness to discussions made it more collaborative. Haki admitted that this was the third film that had brought him to tears during the writing process.

Hanung preserved the novel’s core theme of life’s rhythm, symbolized through breathing. However, he introduced an open ending, allowing viewers to interpret whether Daku would pursue his newfound love or not. He believes that Indonesian audiences are discerning enough not to need a definitive conclusion.
