A young man, Jian, travels from Hong Kong to Liuzhou in China to visit his aging father who runs a spicy noodles shop with his caregiver and occasional noodle cook, Ah Ping. She fears that Jian will eventually take over the eatery but is unaware that he can only taste sweet, sour and bitter flavours but not hot spicy chili peppers, a crucial ingredient in his father’s signature dish. When Jian reconnects with his childhood friend, now a striking woman working at the local market, their passionate encounter reawakens his senses restoring his ability to taste hot peppers.
Frankie Lee is a Hong Kong film director and TV programme creator who has produced a number of acclaimed short films. His graduation work Mamamoo (2021), made for the Hong Kong Film Directors’ Guild Masterclass in Film Directing, won Best Short Film and Best Director at the Vegas Film Awards and earned Silver prizes for both categories at the Tokyo Film Awards. His short Goldfish Street (2021) received the third prize for Film of the Year at RTHK, while 42M (2023) won the Gold Award at the 10th Microfilm Production Support Scheme. Most recently, his work Sweet, Sour and Bitter... was awarded at the International Film Camp 2024, organised by the Asian Film Awards Academy. The film had its world premiere at the 27th Far East Film Festival.
