Jakarta Film Week (JFW) 2024 is just around the corner, and various supporting events are starting to take place. One of them is the collaboration between Jakarta Film Week and the Universitas Indonesia Film Festival (UIFF) through an event titled “From Campus to Global: How to Expand Your Short Film.” This event was held on September 28, 2024, at the Auditorium Building X, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Indonesia. UI Film Festival, known as a platform for showcasing works by students and emerging filmmakers, became part of the Road to Jakarta Film Week, aiming to inspire young filmmakers to take a further step to the international level.
The event featured two speakers, Novi Hanabi, a film producer and program manager of Jakarta Film Week, and Fazrie Permana, director of the acclaimed film “Alif Pengen Punya Pacar, Yuli Pengen Dibonceng Ngabers.” Both speakers shared their experiences and tips on how young filmmakers can develop and expand their short films to gain global recognition.
Building Bridges from Campus to the International Arena
The theme of this event focused on expanding the reach of short films from campus to the global world. According to Novi Hanabi, this collaboration is an important step in bridging young Indonesian filmmakers with international opportunities. “Film festivals are an invaluable platform to introduce original works to a broader audience. We want to encourage young filmmakers to go beyond local recognition, but start thinking about how their work can be appreciated on the international stage,” said Novi.
Meanwhile, Fazrie Permana emphasized the importance of addressing universal issues that resonate with a global audience. As a filmmaker who has successfully brought his works to various international festivals, Fazrie shared tips on how to blend local elements with globally relevant stories. “When making a film, we need to remain authentic to our cultural identity, but we also need to resonate with broader issues. That is the key for our films to transcend boundaries,” he added.
Screening of Short Films Addressing Various Themes
In addition to discussion sessions and talks, the event also featured screenings of selected short films that became the highlight. Here are some of the film that were screened during the event:
The films not only offer unique perspectives from young filmmakers but also touch on a variety of themes, ranging from comedy, and daily life, to fantasy and science fiction. Alif Pengen Punya Pacar, Yuli Pengen Dibonceng Ngabers, for example, depict the dynamics of teenage relationships wrapped in fresh humor. Meanwhile, Singapore’s M.U.R.B.Y features creative animations filled with philosophy and meaning.
UIFF as the Gateway to the Jakarta Film Week 2024 International Festival
With the Road to Jakarta Film Week event taking place at the University of Indonesia, Jakarta Film Week 2024 is getting closer and anticipated by many. This collaboration is clear evidence of how UIFF is not only an event for local filmmakers to showcase their work but also a platform to prepare young filmmakers to step into the international arena.
