Jakarta Film Week (JFW) returns with another unique set of events in this year’s “Road to Jakarta Film Week”, this time collaborating with the Faculty of Film and Television of Institute of the Arts Jakarta (FFTV IKJ). This event, titled “Audience 101: Navigate Your Short Film” is held on 20 September 2024 in the Studio Tom FFTV IKJ and is attended by numerous industry people, film students, and young filmmakers who want to deepen their knowledge about their audience and distribution strategies for short films.
Film Screening and Discussion Forum with Experts
The event opened with a short film screening featuring works from budding local filmmakers. After the screening, there was a discussion panel moderated by two keynote speakers: Gayatri Nadya, Festival Manager of Jakarta Film Week, and Netanya Yemima, the young talented director behind the film Sunat Racing.
Gayatri Nadya, also known as an organiser of the independent film theatre Kinosaurus, discussed the challenges of distributing short films in Indonesia. “Although the numbers of short films being produced increases every year, there is still the limitation of accessibility in screening short films. Thus young filmmakers are required to be creative about choosing their distribution venues, including making use of film festivals or digital platforms,” she said.
Netanya Yemima also shared her experience in bringing her short film to festivals and digital platforms. As the film director of Sunat Racing, she emphasises the importance of understanding one’s audience and ways to arrange the right distribution strategies. “Short films do have their own challenges, especially in their brief durations and specific audience. We need to know where to bring our films and how to reach the right kind of audience,” she explained.
Unlocking New Opportunities for Young and New Filmmakers
This discussion becomes an important moment for participants to get to know their next audience as well as the nitty gritty of short film distribution—from selecting the right festival, to taking advantage of online platforms or other community channels. In the Q&A session, many participants asked for practical steps to expand their short films’ outreach, especially in the lack of access to conventional screens.
The event was closed with optimism that today’s digital platforms can provide new opportunities for young filmmakers to experiment and explore the accessibility of their works. This collaboration between Jakarta Film Week and FFTV IKJ is hoped to be a bridge for the next generation of filmmakers to enter the constantly growing film industry.
A Discussion for Future Generations of Filmmakers
“Audience 101: Navigate Your Short Film” is a vital component of the program Road to Jakarta Film Week, which not only offers quality film screenings, but also unlocks detailed discussion spaces about the importance of effective distribution for short films. Through this collaboration with FFTV IKJ, the event becomes an enriching learning environment for young filmmakers to understand how to attract their audiences as well as take the most advantage of existing distribution platforms.
With the support of industry professionals such as Gayatri Nadya dan Netanya Yemima, Road to Jakarta Film Week successfully becomes a relevant and inspirational medium of education for all those involved in the world of cinema, especially short films.
