This comic sketch of life in a low-cost apartment complex follows the colorful ups and downs of its residents. Somad, a brewery worker forbidden by his grandfather to date, gets help from Badrun in his search for a wife, though his attempts often end in failure. Zuleha, the gangster Gandun’s mistress, and other women add to the lively atmosphere, alongside the flirtatious neighborhood chief and Mastun, a widow who is always behind on her rent. Somad falls for Enka, Gandun’s wealthy daughter, but she sees him only as a friend. Trouble erupts when Sandrak, Gandun’s fugitive associate, causes chaos before being caught by the neighborhood guards. In the end, Somad finds love with the girl next door.
Born in Malang, Nyak Abbas Akup began his career in 1952 after passing the assistant director examination at PERFINI, led by Usmar Ismail. He worked with D. Djajakusuma on Harimau Tjampa (1953) before making his directorial debut with Heboh (1954). He gained wider recognition with Tiga Buronan (1957). Over his career, he worked on 34 films and became known for his distinctive comedy. His popular films include Bing Slamet Koboi Cengeng (1974) and Inem Pelayan Sexy (1976). His screenplay for Cintaku di Rumah Susun (1987) won an award at the 1988 Asia-Pacific Film Festival. He received the Usmar Ismail Award in 1989 and two special awards at the 1991 Indonesian Film Festival.
