Road to Jakarta Film Week with ISBI Bandung and Cinecussion Movie Exhibition, Presenting an Engaging Discussion on Short Film Distribution

Jakarta Film Week, in collaboration with the Indonesian Institute of Arts and Culture (ISBI) Bandung and Cinecussion Movie Exhibition, held the Road to Jakarta Film Week event with the theme “Exploring Your Short Film Distribution.” This event aims to strengthen the film ecosystem in Indonesia and is one of the programs leading up to Jakarta Film Week 2024, which will take place from October 23 to 27, 2024. The event was held offline at the Sunan Ambu Performance Hall, ISBI Bandung.

The event began with screenings of a compilation of short films from various countries and programs, including films from the Jakarta Film Fund and Cinema World Asia. Some of the films shown include:

  • A Mirror (India)
  • Shenanigans (Vietnam)
  • Rabu Yang Bahagia (Jakarta Film Fund 2023)
  • One Night in Chinatown (Jakarta Film Fund 2023)

In addition to the film screenings, the event continued with a discussion titled “Exploring Your Short Film Distribution,” featuring Novi Hanabi (Film Producer and Program Manager of Jakarta Film Week) and Candra Aditya (Director and Screenwriter). They shared insights on strategies for distributing short films across various platforms, including Over the Top (OTT), film festivals, and community screenings.

Understanding How Films Meet Their Audiences

Films are no longer just screened in theatres and on TV. Now, we have community screens, film festivals, OTT platforms, in-flight entertainment, and many more. Like cooking, different screens give different flavours and techniques, and of course, different audiences. The challenge for filmmakers is how to tailor their work to suit the chosen medium and its target audiences, or whether filmmakers always need to tend to the market trends and existing forms of media.

The discussion was an in-depth yet relaxed session, aiming to understand the creative process of marketing a film to meet its audience. Film marketing is often done after production is complete, even though the form of the film can influence its market—or even the other way around. The discussion covered various aspects, including scriptwriting, casting, genre, partnerships, and how to create a proper and effective press kit.

“Bridging Young Filmmakers to Navigate the Industry”

With this discussion session, it is hoped that more young filmmakers will take the industry seriously, fostering a new generation of talent that will shine in the future.

“It would be such a loss if there is a break in regeneration, especially since we didn’t do much during the pandemic, right? From there, we wanted to contribute to this industry. One way is through this event, where we can bridge young filmmakers to get to know the industry,” explained Novi Hanabi, one of the speakers at the event.

The response was overwhelmingly positive, as the event was seen as highly inspiring and beneficial for young filmmakers. One of the attendees expressed the excitement, saying, “The event was really cool, the speakers were amazing, and the films were great. I hope it reaches a wider audience and becomes even more successful.”

This event is part of the Road to Jakarta Film Week, a pre-festival program aimed at strengthening the film industry while also promoting the upcoming Jakarta Film Week. This collaboration not only serves as a film screening platform but also as an opportunity to share experiences and knowledge within the filmmaking community.
