Jakarta Film Week 2024 Presents Horror Nostalgia with Sumpah Pocong Lintang and Bayu

Jakarta Film Week 2024 concluded with great fanfare, showcasing a range of films from diverse genres. One of the highlights of the festival was the screening of the Indonesian horror classic, Sumpah Pocong Lintang dan Bayu (1988), held at CGV Grand Indonesia on Sunday, October 27, 2024. This film, which shocked audiences during its original release, successfully brought a sense of nostalgia while challenging the courage of viewers in attendance.

Through the revival of Indonesian classic films, Jakarta Film Week not only entertains but also educates younger generations on the history of Indonesian cinema. The screening of Sumpah Pocong Lintang dan Bayu served as a special moment for fans of Indonesian film, especially those who grew up with this cult classic. The story of Lintang and Bayu, trapped by the fearsome “pocong” oath, took audiences on a journey back in time.

The film’s intense and eerie atmosphere captivated viewers, immersing them in the suspense and fear experienced by its characters. Beyond its horror elements, the film also presents social values that remain relevant and sparked discussions among attendees post-screening.

“This film is not just entertainment; it’s a reflection of society at that time,” shared one attendee. “I am very impressed by how the film addresses universal themes like love, sacrifice, and trust,” he added.

The selection of Sumpah Pocong Lintang dan Bayu in the festival lineup is a tribute to Indonesian cinema, showcasing the fact that the Indonesian film industry in the past was capable of producing high-quality works that could compete internationally.

Charles Gozali, son of legendary director Hendrick Gozali, was also present at the event. During a Q&A session, Charles offered interesting insights into the film. “The belief that the ‘pocong’ oath originated from a particular religion still exists today. However, this film emphasizes that the pocong oath is rooted in local culture, not religion,” Charles explained.

He also shared details about the collaboration between Indonesia and Malaysia in the making of the film. “This movie is a joint effort between Indonesia and Malaysia, which explains why the antagonist, played by Malaysian actor Sabree Fadzil, couldn’t be killed off as originally planned,” he said.

Regarding a potential remake, Charles revealed that Sumpah Pocong Lintang dan Bayu is among the films slated for a reboot. However, it remains undecided whether the setting will stay in the 1980s or be updated to the present day. “The pocong oath film is on the remake list for next year, but it’s still undecided whether it will retain its original period setting or take place in modern times,” he noted.

The screening of Sumpah Pocong Lintang dan Bayu was met with an enthusiastic response from viewers, proving that classic Indonesian films still hold a place in the hearts of moviegoers. For more information on films, events, and other exciting news, visit www.jakartafilmweek.com.
