Jakarta, 25 August 2021. The Jakarta Tourism and Creative Economy Office officially launched Jakarta Film Week, an international-scale film festival in Jakarta that will take place from 18-21 November. The launch that was held online on Wednesday (25/8), was attended by Gumilar Ekalaya as Acting Head of Jakarta Tourism and Creative Economy Office, Ekky Imanjaya as Festival Board, Rina Damayanti as Festival Director, and Lisa Siregar as Program Coordinator.
Taking place during the pandemic, Jakarta Film Week will serve as a showcase event for filmmakers to meet the audience. The festival will open new paths or opportunities for work, to expand networks, and to discover new potentials despite post-pandemic limitations. This festival is also expected to contribute to the strengthening of the economy after the pandemic.
“By supporting the film industry and its actors through this festival, the Jakarta Tourism and Creative Economy Office shows real steps to help revive the creative economy after the pandemic. We hope that this can be momentous to strengthen the Indonesian film industry again as it holds the potentials to excel in the world,” said Gumilar Ekalaya, Acting Head of Jakarta Tourism and Creative Economy Office.
The presence of Jakarta Film Week will also serve as a forum for honing skills and knowledge, sharing novel ideas and relevant technologies for Indonesian film industry players. “We hope that this international festival can improve the competitiveness of Indonesian films in international forums. In addition, Jakarta Film Week also aims to invite filmmakers to adapt to various challenges and new forms as a joint effort to rebuild the film industry,” added Rina Damayanti, Director of the Jakarta Film Week Festival.
In its implementation, Jakarta Film Week has two main programs. Namely, film screening and non-film screening programs. The film screening at Jakarta Film Week will screen feature films and short films from Indonesia and overseas, which are divided into two categories: competition and non-competition.
For the competition category, Jakarta Film Week has three awards: Global Feature Award (best international feature film award), Direction Award (best Indonesian feature film award), and Global Short Award (best international short film award). Filmmakers can register their films no later than 30 September 2021. The selected films will be divided into two categories: competition and non-competition, which will be screened online and screened live in theaters.
The non-film screening program will consist of the Jakarta Film Fund, Masterclasses, Talks, Community as well as Exhibition and Showcase. The Jakarta Film Fund is a story idea competition in which the residents of Jakarta can participate. The registration for story ideas is now open and will close on 12 September 2021. The five best stories chosen by the jury will receive a support funding of IDR30,000,000 for production. Winners will also receive mentoring from professional filmmakers, movielab directing, scriptwriting, and editing. All completed films will be screened at the festival in November.
In addition to providing training for professionals, the Masterclasses will also bring in film industry professionals and speakers with experience in the international film industry. Therefore, the non-film screening programs are designed to serve as a space for the film community to expand their network and exchange knowledge with experts to develop film projects and their respective organizations.
Jakarta Film Week is anticipated to be a forum for Indonesian film industry players, especially in Jakarta, to develop in terms of discourse, skills, and network. Furthermore, it can be a trigger for the film industry in other regions to grow so that the quality of the film industry in Indonesia improves collectively.
