Gwai Lou (⻤佬) means “Foreign devil”, it is common Cantonese slang for Westerners. Now it is what she calls herself. Last year she won the Jakarta Global Short Competition, Jakarta Film Week with her short film The Girls Are Alright.
Annabel Tiu was born in Malaysia, in 1982. She is a mixed ethnicity (indigenous Kadazan and Chinese Filipino) Malaysian filmmaker and musician. She is a trilingual (English, Mandarin Chinese, and Malay) and it has shaped the way she understands the world and the kind of films she is interested in making.
