Technology in film has been continuously evolving over time, in parallel with the advancement of computer and graphic technologies. One of the obsessions in technological development is how it can engineer reality, bringing to life the fantasies or imaginations created by humans, in the most lifelike form possible. Immersive technology makes this possible. Extended Reality (XR) technology is at least the most recent development in the last decade. Previously, in the early 2000s, CGI (Computer-Generated Imagery) technology began to be used to create visual effects, such as in the film “The Matrix” (1999), for instance.
Extended Reality (XR) itself is an umbrella term encompassing Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), and Mixed Reality (MR) techniques. With VR, viewers can feel as though they are in a computer-generated environment. With AR and MR, we can see film characters or objects appearing in our own surroundings and interact with them, as if they were really present in the same room. In essence, through this immersive technology, we aim to experience a more genuine, vibrant, and dramatic viewing experience. Nevertheless, the next question is whether this immersive technology is already known and applied by filmmakers in Indonesia.
This talk show aims to explore the extent to which immersive technology like XR can create new cinematic experiences or unexplored possibilities for Indonesian filmmakers. The discussion invites Upie Guava and Anggy Umbara to provide their perspectives as directors who have been involved in producing films, music videos, and advertisements using XR technology. Topics like these have not been widely discussed in formal discussions or perhaps in everyday conversations among film enthusiasts. Therefore, this discussion will serve as an introduction to ignite further, more in-depth discussions about technology in film, which will be more comprehensive and specific.
